Wednesday 14th February – travel and walk *** Roses littoral cliff walk
– sunny periods
Better night on the beach aire at Leucate we shared with a dozen white
elephants but we had a large space and parked side on so had a nice view of
the sea. As Mag made a cuppa at 7.45 I walked over to the old life guard
tower to get some pics of the sunrise. Most of the big campers had gone by
the time we had breakfast except a six-wheeler who had six children ranging
from a toddler looking out of the window to about eight and they were
playing rock jumping around the aire, great to see kids playing with no
mobile phone involved, the family had driven all the way from Finland!
After the sun rose it promptly disappeared behind cloud but we did see
glimpses of it during the day. With the weather indifferent in the Pyrenees
we headed off to Spain, stopping at the windsurfing shops one last time but
I am blowed if I am spending 290 euros on a tatty looking Mistral Screamer
so went to the Lidl in Port Leucate and found another windsurfing shop
where the second-hand boards were still an horrendous price, perhaps I will
have better luck in Spain! After driving along, the huge Etang we made a
bit of an error, instead of taking the coast road towards Collioure we
ended up in Perpignan but soon found the motorway to Argles-sur-Mer and
onto the stunning Route de Vines. This is a truly amazing road as it winds
its way up and down through very old terraced vineyards with men out
cutting the vines right back! We passed a couple of cycling teams winter
training making the most of the up and down roads. Then just past Cerbere
at the top of the Cap we past the old border buildings which have been well
covered in graffiti! The first building we saw on entering Spain was a
garage selling diesel at 1.25 that’s about 10 cheaper than France so
might get a much cheaper board here, if I can only find some windsurfing
shops! We then headed to Roses at the start of a long bay well known to
windsurfers a spot we have been to for the day before and didn’t like it
but were pleasantly surprised this time:) On entering Roses we passed a
large Citadel, beaches and a port as we headed towards the lighthouse. We
had left Roses and were looking for a spot to turn when we came across
Canyellas with a lovely little deserted beach so we stopped here for ham
baguette. We had had enough of driving so headed back towards Roses looking
for an overnight spot, we found the carpark for the Castile de Trinidad
which was closed and looked the perfect spot elevated above the sea with
great views, but we continued to the port and as they didn’t want
campervans there we returned to the Castile. As it was only 3.30 we
decided to take a walk along the Litteral path which runs along the coast
past the small lighthouse and back to the town where we had lunch.
Continuing further it was pretty much the same, sad looking empty
apartments one side and clear sea the other with lots of cactus and
brightly coloured flowers, the main downside despite the numerous signs
asking you to pick it up was dog crap everywhere:( We were out an hour and
a half and looked forward to our cuppa and cake. We were just relaxing as
the sun was setting across the bay when several youngsters in hatchbacks
turned up and preceded to shout to each other from their car windows! Now
feeling pretty uncomfortable we drove the short distance to the lighthouse
carpark and found a sheltered spot behind a wall for the night. I did think
about walking into Roses but it looked a long way and it started to rain
when I was taking some night pics of the castle. It is quiet here now so
let’s hope it’s not a spot for youths to drink their lager, looking
promising at the moment:)
